ISK 6,500

The workshop is for anyone interested in books, experienced book makers, designers, readers and anything in between.

The workshop focuses on working through the materiality of a book.

Participants will come closer to understanding the book(s) through looking, feeling and modifying. Each participant receives a book that they will get to know, describe and then manipulate, observing how small gestures such as folding, cutting or removing can transform the feeling of an object and the interactions it allows. The workshop is speculative with a focus on discussion and feedback and will include input about certain technical aspects of traditional and experimental bookmaking practices.

Materials are provided, but participants are free to bring specific tools if they please.

The workshop is led by graphic designers Jana Sofie Liebe and Una María Magnúsdóttir. Jana Sofie Liebe is a Swiss graphic and book designer educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam and Zürcher Hochschule der Künste and was recently awarded the Golden letter for the best book design from all over the world 2024. Una María Magnúsdóttir is a graphic designer educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam. Both have a tendency towards design details that derive from predetermined characteristics and in their collaborative work, the physical manifestation of a designed object plays a main role.

The workshop is held in relation to the current exhibition at the Museum of Design and Applied Art, The most Beautiful Books in the World, held in collaboration with  The Association of Icelandic Graphic Designers  and  Stiftung Buckunst.
