Henný Eldey Vilhjálmsdóttir, known to the nation as Elly Vilhjálms, left behind a unique musical legacy. Her voice lives on, and the songs she sang have long since become part of the Icelandic national soul. Vesturport presents a grand concert in tribute to this beloved singer in Eldborg Hall at Harpa on 27 December at 16:00 and 20:00. The concert was first performed in 2025, marking the 90th anniversary of Elly's birth, and sold out almost immediately. Now there is a new chance to experience Elly's music, with a revised and expanded programme and an even grander production. Singer Katrín Halldóra performs the highlights of Elly's career together with special guests and Guðmundur Óskar Guðmundsson's big band, with new arrangements by Hjörtur Ingvi Jóhannsson. Gísli Örn and Ólafur Egill narrate the concert, tracing Elly's career in a lively and entertaining way. This is a unique opportunity to hear Elly's songs once again and to remember the singer who lent her distinctive voice and interpretation to Icelandic popular music. Elly Vilhjálms Elly was born in 1935 at Merkines near Hafnir. She was at once a quiet girl from the Suðurnes peninsula and a woman of the world, shy and reserved yet also capable and determined. Above all, it was her unique voice and sensitive interpretation that made her one of the nation's most memorable singers. When Elly began her singing career, dance bands generally focused mainly on instrumental playing, and singers were often more decoration than independent artists. For female singers, the working environment was even harder. Their careers were usually short and generally ended with marriage, when social norms expected them to devote themselves to housework and raising children. Elly, however, did not let those expectations decide her path. She joined the band of Eyþór Þorláksson, her first husband, and after their divorce she sang for years with the KK Sextet. She later sang with the band of Jón Páll Eyjólfsson, her second husband, to enormous popularity. Seven years passed from Elly's first appearance on stage until she recorded her first album. She had long feared that her voice would "sound terrible" on recordings. That fear proved unfounded: her performance of "Vegir liggja til allra átta" from the film 79 af stöðinni made her a nationally known star. Shortly afterwards, Elly joined one of the country's best-known bands and married its bandleader, Svavar Gests, her third husband. Together they built a thriving music and record-publishing business
