At the Iceland Symphony Youth Orchestra concerts, concertgoers get the opportunity to peek into the future of the Icelandic music scene. Every year, our young people tackle an ambitious project from music history that they choose themselves after careful consideration and debate. This season, they have chosen Rimsky-Korsakov's magnificent orchestral work, based on the fairy tale world of A Thousand and One Nights, where the charming Scheherazade weaves a world of stories night after night for the Sultan, thus saving her life. The sound of symphony orchestras rarely gets more colourful than in this particular piece of music, as Rimsky-Korsakov was a supreme master of writing for orchestra. The work is by far the composer's most popular, and the reasons for its popularity are completely understandable. The music is bursting at the seams with enchanting melodies spiced with an exotic soundscape, and here all the colours of a symphony orchestra are used to their fullest.
