his concert will feature two pieces performed by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra for the first time: Piano Concerto by Clara Schumann and Symphony No. 2 by Anton Bruckner. The piano concerto will be played in the unique interpretation of Alexandra Dariescu. The concerto was written by Clara when she was very young, only 14 years old, as Clara Wieck. A few years later, she married the composer Robert Schumann and took her husband's well-known surname. Bruckner's Second Symphony was nicknamed the "The Symphony of Pauses" due to Bruckner's generous use of pauses to separate formal elements within the work. In the later version of the work, Bruckner had significantly reduced the number of pauses and shortened them, but the name remained, nonetheless. With this symphony, it can be said that Bruckner took a major step in perfecting his mastery of the symphonic form.
Finnish conductor and violinist John Storgårds conducts the Iceland Symphony Orchestra at the concert, but he will also perform the solo violin in three little romances by Clara in an orchestral arrangement by Bernard Rofe.
