One of the most influential artists of our time presents her intimate new performance Republic of Love. Blending music, storytelling, electronics, and her unmistakable voice, Laurie Anderson explores the fragile connections between love and power, hope and resistance, memory and the future.
A pioneer of multimedia art and experimental music, Anderson invites the audience on a poetic, humorous, and deeply human journey—where personal stories echo the political present, and where art becomes a form of care, inquiry, and quiet rebellion.
Republic of Love offers a rare opportunity to experience Laurie Anderson at her most personal and visionary.
Republic of Love
Last spring, I was asked to participate in a big festival in Vienna. Dance theater, music, and literature. The theme of the festival was the rise of fascism in Europe. I was asked to give a two hour talk about the relationship between government and love. I’m not used to getting assignments, but this one was so challenging. I couldn’t pass it up. This talk eventually became The Republic of Love- which is a collection of songs and stories made for several different groups of musicians. In Iceland, The Republic of Love will be an intimate version for two stringed instruments featuring violist Martha Mooke.
