Saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, and arranger Haukur Gröndal celebrates his 50th birthday with a grand concert in Harpa’s Norðurljós Hall on Tuesday evening, December 30, 2025. With a career spanning over thirty years in both Icelandic and international music scenes, Haukur has earned a unique place for his original voice, exceptional sensitivity, and profound creative spirit.

Throughout his career, Haukur has participated in a wide range of music-related projects—from live performances and compositions to arrangements and music releases, both in Iceland and abroad. His soundscapes are layered and deeply personal; at times raw and improvisational, at other times silky and contemplative—always guided by a strong sense of creativity and passion.

Career and Education

Haukur began his musical studies at the Garðabær Music School as a child and later graduated in saxophone performance from the FÍH School of Music in 1997. He then moved to Denmark, where he completed a master’s degree at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen in 2004. From the beginning, Haukur has worked tirelessly to develop his own musical language, often at the intersection of jazz, classical, world music, and folk traditions.

The Concert – A Journey Through Sound and Time

The program features works from various periods of Haukur’s career, inviting listeners on a journey painted with personal and poetic tones. Joining him on stage is a stellar lineup of musicians he has collaborated with over the years in diverse musical contexts.

This will be an evening where the present and the past dance together, where silence and sound meet in deep conversation—and the audience becomes not just a guest, but an active participant in a story still unfolding.
