Berlin-based percussionist and improviser Joss Turnbull is known for his creative take on Middle Eastern finger drums. Introduced to Iranian percussion by Mohammed Mortazavi, the Iranian goblet drum Tombak is the center piece of his artistic work. Using unorthodox instrumental extensions such as rubber balls, tremolo, foils, and live sampling, he creates acoustic spaces that appear both minimalist and overwhelming.
Joss Turnbull’s recently released solo album Turmoil (Boomslang Records, 2025) for tombak, voice, and electronics is an immersive listening experience. It captures a journey of self-expression through sound. The music draws its energy from the moment, challenging conventions and seeking a form that is unpredictable, honest, and deeply engaging. He delves into a world of uncertainty and tension, yet also finds repose in an almost cinematic soundscape.
The performance is part of the Reykjavík Dance Festival program. The festival program can be found at https://www.reykjavikdancefestival.com/
