Barbörukórinn performs a Midnight Mass by Auður Guðjohnsen in Aðventkirkjan on October 24 at 23:00.

Conductor: Guðmundur Óli Gunnarsson.

The Mass will be performed by a mixed choir and a cappella.

The aim of this composition is to increase interest in Icelandic choral music by reaching a broader audience with a musical language that is both accessible and powerful. No less important is the purpose of reviving one of the most renowned forms of church music and breathing new life into the sacred texts.

Nordic choral music continues to attract growing interest among choir directors and choral enthusiasts abroad, and Icelandic music is no exception. It is the role of Icelandic composers to enrich the repertoire of Icelandic choral music, particularly within the field of sacred music, thereby strengthening the church’s activities, its dignity, and its esteem.

The project has received support from the RÚV & STEF Composers’ Fund, the Church Music Fund & STEF, the FÍH Cultural Fund, and the Friðrik Bjarnason & Guðlaugur Pétursdóttir Fund. An additional grant will be sought from the STEF Music Publishing Fund in April to support the publication of the Mass in book form, and the choir also plans to record it in the near future.

Barbörukórinn is a chamber choir founded in the spring of 2007 by Guðmundur Sigurðsson, organist of Hafnarfjarðarkirkja, together with several singers. The choir consists of 16 professional singers and is known for its pure sound and professional presentation. It takes its name from Saint Barbara, whose statue was discovered in 1950 during an excavation of an old chapel in Kapelluhraun, Hafnarfjörður. The choir performs regularly at services in Hafnarfjarðarkirkja, in concerts, and at funerals both there and elsewhere.

The concert is presented in collaboration with Opera Days.
