About a hundred young people from Iceland's music schools participate in the Iceland Symphony Orchestra's orchestral course each year under the guidance of professional instrumentalists and conductors. The Iceland Symphony Youth Orchestra held its first concert in the fall of 2009 and has since attracted well-deserved attention, with the Youth Orchestra receiving the "Brightest Hope" award at the 2016 Icelandic Music Awards. This year's orchestra is made up of music students from across the country who were selected from a large group of young people who had auditioned for a place in the orchestra.
The Youth Orchestra is known for its synchronised performance and unique interpretation, and this year they will tackle Tchaikovsky's amazing and dramatic Fourth Symphony. The Fourth Symphony has long been considered "autobiographical," placing it in a group of works such as Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique.
