The Edinburgh Open Orchestra visits the Icelandic Amateur Orchestra to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the latter. The two orchestras give a concert in the Norðurljós concert hall of Harpa on May 18, at 16h.
This visit, and a reciprocal visit of the Icelandic orchestra to Scotland, was originally planned for 2020 but had to be postponed for well known reasons. The idea sparked an idea of a new composition by the composer Tom Cunningham, who played in the Scottish orchestra, The new work, „Land of fire and water“ was to be premiered during the visits. The premier in Edinburgh took place in 2022 but the Icelandic premiere will be in the concert on May 18. The composition reflects on the common volcanic heritage of Scotland and Iceland. The program also includes two compositions by Antonin Dvorák, the Romance for solo violin and orchestra, and the Symphony no. 8. Conductors in the concert will be Andrew Lees and Oliver Kentish. Andrew Lees will also play the solo violin part in the Romance.
