North Atlantic Brass takes the audience on a journey through the Nordic soundscape, performing folk tunes that have been passed down through generations alongside contemporary works inspired by the same musical heritage. At the heart of the programme are two world premieres: Ballarbyxn by Icelandic composer Þórður Hallgrímsson, written especially for the ensemble, and For Simon by British composer Nick Martin. The programme also includes Brass Quintet No. 1 by Danish composer Vagn Holmboe and Three Norwegian Dances by Mogens Andresen. North Atlantic Brass is an internationally award-winning brass quintet consisting of Gunnar Kristinn Óskarsson, Frederik Pehrsson, Erling Róbert Eydal, Gunnar Helgason and August Schieldrop. Alongside their work with the ensemble, the five musicians perform with many of Scandinavia’s leading orchestras. Whether you know these melodies by heart or are hearing them for the first time, Echoes of the North is an invitation to experience the rich traditions of Nordic music through the sound of a brass quintet, celebrating both the music that has shaped our past and the composers who are shaping its future. Duration: Approximately 1 hour 50 minutes, including a 25-minute intermission.
