Sonata masterworks for cello and piano

Cellist Geirþrúður Anna Guðmundsdóttir and pianist Jane Ade have collaborated regularly since they were fellow students in Iceland. In this concert they will perform three exuberant and exciting sonatas by Boccherini, Beethoven and Prokofiev, along with the beautiful Adagio and Allegro by Schumann.

Boccherini wrote several virtuosic sonatas for the cello, among which Sonata no. 17 in C-major is one of his most popular. Beethoven's fifth sonata for cello and piano is defined by rhythmic energy and drama, but also displays the composers most poignant and intimate writing. Schumann employs similar juxtapositions of character in the bittersweet Adagio and the ebullient Allegro. The program concludes with the magnificent Sonata for cello and piano by Prokofiev, which is one of the most dramatic and euphoric works ever written for these instruments.
