Marathon Concert on Culture Night – Iceland Symphony
Works by JS Bach, Leonard Bernstein, Gioacchino Rossini, Ethel Smyth, John Williams, Vangelis, and others.

Bjarni Frímann Bjarnason, conductor
Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir, master of ceremonies

The 36th Reykjavík Marathon takes place on Culture Night 2019 — during the daytime, though! Many members of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra have participated in the race through the years, and many runners are ardent fans of symphonic music. At the Iceland Symphony’s latter Culture Night concert, the Orchestra will perform vivid, invigorating music to honour those who took part in the race during the day — and all those who watched from the sidelines and cheered participants on.

The programme begins with John Williams’ famous Olympic theme and concludes with a quintessential runner’s anthem — the beloved theme from the film Chariots of Fire. Sandwiched in between these two offerings are rhythmic pieces such as Bernstein’s Mambo, a movement from a Bach Brandenburg Concerto, and the overture to Rossini’s William Tell. A celebration of music and sport that the whole family can enjoy together!

The Iceland Symphony Orchestra invites the general public to two concerts on Culture Night in Reykjavík. Admission is free. Tickets to the concerts are available at Harpa Ticket Office and here from 11:00 am on concert day
