Umbra, founded in 2014, is an alternative music ensemble with eclectic tastes, exploring both ancient and contemporary music through improvisation and original arrangements. The artistic vision of the players is to blur the boundaries of tradition and to appeal to a wide audience by breathing new life into ancient music.

Umbra transports listeners into the mystery of Medieval music from Iceland and elsewhere in   Europe: England, Germany, Spain and Catalonia. The undead, life’s hardships, and the cold and dark have long been fodder for Icelandic folk music—such is life on a remote and isolated island. This darkness in Medieval European music however manifests rather as a fixation on human suffering and man’s sinful nature and frailty. Still the music possesses an undeniable beauty and individuality that resonates with today’s listeners.
