Um viðburðinn

Fjallgerður is María Arnardóttir’s graduation work from the Department of Performing Arts at Iceland University of the Arts. Fjallgerður is a monument to Hallgerður langbrók, a monument to Laugarnes, an amplification of that which has been forgotten and long since neglected and ignored. Fjallgerður is an invitation to women, an invitation to everyone; to find voice and take space.

When María was a child, she used to think the most important thing in the world was to be good. As she grew up, that belief somehow stuck with her. She focused on being to others what she didn’t think she could be for herself. Hallgerður was different. As she grew up, she determinedly took the space she needed – even though her subversive behavior had repercussions, such as her community labeling her as stubborn, wayward and disobedient. Hallgerður stood up for herself.

Fjallgerður takes place in the meadow of Laugarnes. Dress according to the weather and bring good shoes. Unfortunately this is not a wheel chair accessible performance. The spoken language is Icelandic.

Bio

María Arnardóttir is an Iceland-based artist who practices across the boundaries of performance and installation. Trained in music and design, she uses her background as a tool to manipulate and create durational spaces. Since graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 2016, she has developed a body of trans-disciplinary solo and collective work in Europe and North America. She regularly collaborates with musicians and scenographers who share her ongoing fascinations with the physicality of both performer and audience. Rituals and time travel are topics currently on her mind.
