Folk
tales play an important part in Nordic culture. Issun Boshi is the first
known folk tale in Japan. We meet an old couple who live in the countryside
of Japan. Their greatest wish is to have a child. When they do, he does not
grow any bigger than a doll. At age fifteen, the boy wants to explore the
world and sets for adventure despite his parent's concern that he is so
small. With the aid of the piano and clavichord (a wooden piano) we invite
the audience into a magical landscape where little ones can do great things,
and to be different becomes a strength.
