The film takes place in Denmark, 1770. Queen Caroline Mathilda is married to Christian VII, who suffers from mental illness. The queen has a secret affair with the king’s doctor, Johann Struensee. Due to the king’s debilitated state, Caroline and Struensee take over the country. But some of the decisions they make prove to be very unpopular among Denmark's upper classes and they suddenly find that they have some very powerful enemies.

Mads Mikkelsen
The Danish actor Mads Dittman Mikkelsen became a household name after his portrayal of villain Le Chiffre in the James Bond film Casino Royal in 2006. By then he was already known in Europe for his acting skills.
Mads Mikkelsen was born in Østerbro in Copenhagen on October 22, 1965. He started acting late in life, he studied gymnastics and attended a ballet school in Göteborg in Sweden, and worked as a professional dancer for almost a decade before turning to acting. His breakthrough performance was in the Danish crime-thriller Pusher (1996) when he was 30 years old. The film became popular throughout Europe and made the charming actor famous.
Mikkelsen’s roles include playing Igor Stravinsky in the French film Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky (2009) and Lukas in the Danish film The Hunt (2012) by Thomas Vinterberg. For his work on The Hunt he was awarded Best Actor in a Main Role at the Cannes Film Festival. He has been universally praised for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in the NBC series Hannibal.
