Orpheus & Eurydice
Work by Erna Ómarsdóttir
The legend of Orpheus and Eurydice and their eternal love exists in a number of variations, but it also has a strong connection with another myth, that of the goddess Demeter - Mother Earth - who had to leave her daughter, Persephone, in the underworld. Actually, many of Athens' greatest agricultural festivals were celebrated in Demeter‘s honour. In IDC‘s version of Orpheus and Eurydice, the myth becomes a tale of the eternal cycle of growth and decay, birth and death. It focuses on mutations, art-making and the creative process from which Orpheus, „the genius“, springs – a figure who has a hypnotic impact on others with his singing, one who thrives on sorrow and his longing for a lost bride.
"Orpheus+Eurydice" is a new borderline-musical about life and death, understanding and feeling, art-making and the screaming silence – who owns the „Golden Fleece“? Where do all the snakes come from? And is Eurydice even interested in returning to her former life?
