American violinist Esther Yoo made headlines in 2010 when, at age 16, she became the youngest person to win the Sibelius Violin Competition. Vladimir Ashkenazy then took her under his wing, giving concerts with her and issuing a compact disk.

Seldom has a young symphonic composer had as memorable an introduction as Gustav Mahler did in 1889, when he published his Symphony no. 1.

But the symphony generated mixed response, as did many of his works, and it was not until the second half of the 20th century that Mahler was recognised as one of the greatest symphonic composers of all time. Osmo Vänskä has long since proven his mastery of Mahler, and his interpretation of Symphony no. 1 is eagerly anticipated. Also on the programme are Three Abstract Paintings, written in 1955. The orchestra's recording of this piece under Vänskä's direction won the MIDEM award in Cannes in 1998.
