Join four of Iceland’s most accomplished contemporary classical singers as they come together for an exquisite evening of wonderful music at the annual Fireworks of the Opera New Year’s concert. Set to be hosted in the Northern Lights (Norðurljós) concert hall of Reykjavík’s landmark building Harpa, the event offers a superb programme carefully crafted with a selection of familiar and festive musical treasures.
With accompaniment provided by exceptional musicians, including a pianist and a marvellous string quartet, these stars of opera, whose talents have been recognized far and wide, return to perform a number of sensational songs and provide goose-bump inducing renditions of great opera classics and popular arias.
Elmar Gilbertsson is a masters graduate of the Royal Conservatory of the Hague and the Conservatory of Amsterdam, a gifted tenor with an impressive repertoire. Starring in numerous opera productions, both locally and internationally, his work has been greatly received. His current engagements include a new production of Die Zauberflöte with The Netherlands Opera and Tosca with Opera Zuid in Maastricht.
Valgerður Guðnadóttir has not only won audiences over with her exceptional talent but she has also won various awards including the Icelandic Music Award as well as the Icelandic Theatre Award for her performance as Maria in The Sound of Music at Reykjavík City Theatre. Last year she wowed Icelandic audiences as Berta in The Icelandic Opera production of The Barber of Seville.
Gissur Páll Gissurarson is the recipient of numerous music awards and has delighted audiences with many unforgettable performances across Europe. He studied his craft in Italy and has since performed in many of the best opera houses in the world. He won the Icelandic Music Award for his performance as Rodolfo in La Boheme, a production by The Icelandic Opera, in 2012.
Oddur Arnþór Jónsson is an award-winning baritone of great distinction, whose performance in The Icelandic Opera’s production of Don Carlo in 2014 won him the Best Newcomer Award at The Icelandic Music Awards. His performance as Don Giovani at the Icelandic Opera this winter stunned Icelandic audiences, as did his impressive rendition the Barber of Seville, the previous year.
