March 10 - The FLEY quintet pays tribute to Horace Silver
Composer and jazz pianist Horace Silver was born in Norwalk, Connecticut, on the 2nd of September, 1928. He first became known when he joined Stan Getz in 1950 and moved subsequently to New York and in addition started composing and arranging. His fame increased considerably when he joined the legendary group led by Art Blakeys, „The Jazz Messengers“ as a pianist, composer and arranger. Many of Silver‘s compositions have appeared on records by the Jazz Messengers and have gradually become jazz standards as well, such as „The Preacher“ and „Song for my father“. Horace Silver left Art Blakey in 1956 and established his own group with the classic line-up of trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass and drums. The FLEY quintet, which will play Silvers best known compositions. They include Blowing the blues away, Doodlin’, Filthy McNasty, Juicy Lucy, Liberated Brother, Peace, Senor Blues, Sister sadie, Song for My Father, Soulville, St Vitus Dance and Strollin’, all transcribed from the original recordings. Egill has transcribed these original arrangements from the legendary recordings of the Horace Silver quintet from the fifties and sixties. Horace Silver left us in 2014.
