Bloodhoof is a chamber opera by Kristín Þóra Haraldsdóttir with visuals by Tinna Kristjánsdóttir, created to the award winning poetic cycle of the same name by Icelandic poet Gerður Kristný, performed by Umbra ensemble and guest performers. This contemporary version of an Old Norse tale, Skírnismál, seen in the light of abduction and abuse of giantess Gerður Gymisdóttir, is here told by an ensemble of female voices, strings and visuals in a work of elemental earthiness.
Bloodhoof will be released in early 2020 on Innova Recordings with Umbra ensemble. The work was performed at MATA Festival and PEN World Voices Festival, NY last year to critical acclaim.
“Breezy muzak entwined with Baroque
intervallic leaps, unusual resolutions, and colored pitches that hearkened
troubadourial traditions and disjunct time.” -I CARE IF YOU LISTEN
The moon launched
its rafts
on the vault of darkness
I let myself fall
in a heap in the grass
burrowed into the earth
descending
the descent roaring
in the portals of my ears
