The double-bass player/composer Tómas R. Einarsson will play with his
quartet at Kaldalón, Harpa, Sunday November 17th. This is a release
concert to celebrate a new album, called Gangandi bassi (Walking Bass). Einarsson bought his first double-bass in August 1979,
so this is a 40 year anniversary. The original music sums up his career in jazz
and Latin music: blues, swing oriented tunes, be-bop and Latin boleros. His
fellow musicians on the record, as well as at the concert in Harpa, are
saxophone-player Óskar Guðjónsson, guitarist Ómar Guðjónsson and percussionist
Sigtryggur Baldursson.
Autuhor Halldór Guðmundsson writes in the liner notes to the record:
“The entirety offers a remarkably complete impression of Tómas’ career, except that this time he completely indulges the melodic tendencies that have always been part of him. He has no qualms about quoting the jazz canon (“Upp og niður”, for example, walks on the sunny side of the street) and the melodies are consistently brilliant, even under the unusual circumstances of being presented by the bass, often in exemplary interplay with the guitar. As a result, the album offers not only an overview of Tómas’ career as a composer, but as a performer as well. An ambulatory adventure if there ever was one.”
