SIGNIFICANT ENCOUNTERS is a project in three parts:

a live performance, a video installation and an underwater sound piece.

SIGNIFICANT ENCOUNTERS looks at how meanings can be constructed based on the coming-together of things. In this instance these things include people, gymnasium mats, bodies of water, whales, video cameras and different spaces within a swimming pool. The work deals with how these things can be situated, put into dialogue with one another and disrupted through mutual encounter. The encounters are presented as a series of situations where each pose a kind of obstacle to the other – either ethical, physical or material.

The swimming pool is a curious space to explore these encounters as it can represent so many things – transformation, transition, freedom, vulnerability and exchange. They are spaces which somehow simulate and empathise with nature, yet demonstrate the potential of human-construction. The swimming pool is a highly complex theatrical and symbolic space.

SIGNIFICANT ENCOUNTERS  was initially presented in the framework of the MFA Performance program at Listaháskóli Íslands (Iceland University of the Arts). The work continues to drift fluidly between people & waters.
