Elja og UNM

10. + 11. ágúst 2018

The chamber orchestra Elja presents two different concert programs at Tjarnarbíó theatre in Reykjavík on 10th and 11th August. On the 10th they‘ll present works by Halldór Eldjárn, Jófríður Ákadóttir (aka JFDR), Arnold Schoenberg and Joseph Haydn, under the title Brot úr minni.

On august 11th, in collaboration with the Icelandic faction of UNM, they present works by 9 composers that were selected by a jury in an application process for this year‘s UNM festival, that takes place in Bergen, Norway at the end of August. This concert bears the title Tvístrun.

Elja is a newly formed chamber orchestra comprising young classical musicians from Iceland. Most of the players are already successful as soloists, chamber musicians, orchestra players and conductors. The chamber orchestra was established in 2017 and introduced themselves to the Icelandic music scene in December 2017, receiving great responses.

Many of Elja’s members studied at the Reykjavik College of Music and the Iceland Academy of the Arts before continuing their musical studies abroad. The goal of the ensemble is to bring the audience a simultaneously energetic, lively, and personal performance of repertoire spanning every genre and era with which classical musicians engage.

Ung Nordisk Musik (UNM) is an annual music festival where 35 nordic composers are chosen every year to participate, hosted in rotation by the five partaking countries. Each faction assembles a jury who select seven works by as many composers to participate. Iceland has been a contributing country since 1974.
