The Icelandic opera will stage La Traviata by Giuseppi Verdi in Harpa´s main hall Eldborg in March 2019. This famous opera about the love of life, freedom, and forbidden love is in three acts and was premiered in Venice in 1853. It is set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave based on La Dame aux Camélias a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas. The opera was originally titled Violetta after the main character and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful operas of the opera repertoire. Attraction between a Parisian courtesan and a young man from a provincial family leads to a forbidden romance that turns into a scandalous affair and ends up as a heartbreaking tragedy.
The production will be conducted by Bjarni Frímann Bjarnason, stage director will be Oriol Tomas, set will be designed by Simon Guilbault and Sébastien Dionne designes the costumes. The video will be designed by Félix Fradet-Faquy.
