The Harpa International Music Academy’s 6th annual festival for classical music students is held from June 27th – July 14th. Over seventy students from seven countries will study with outstanding Icelandic and international faculty. The students receive training through private lessons and masterclasses, chamber music and orchestra. The following events take place in Harpa:
July 4th at 16:30 in Northern Lights Hall: Lin Yao Ji’s Life and Teaching Essence
Lin Wei Sigurgeirsson, violinist and Artistic Director of the Academy, gives a seminar and masterclass based on the life work and pedagogy of her father, Lin Yao Ji, who was one of the most respected violin professors at the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music in the 20th century. Free entry.
July 4th at 20:00 in Northern Lights Hall: String Quartets - Opening Concert
Sibbi Bernhardsson, Violin Professor at Oberlin Conservatory, holds an intensive string quartet seminar in the art of string quartet performance from June 27th - July 4th. In this concert, the participating groups will perform movements from quartets by Mozart, Shostakovich, Schumann, Haydn and Mendelssohn.
July 11th at 10:00 in Kaldalón Hall: Masterclass with Judith Ingolfsson
Judith Ingolfsson is one of Iceland’s best known violinists. She won first prize in the 1998 Indianapolis Violin Competition and has since performed in the world’s best concert halls. In her masterclass, Judith will share her knowledge with several violin students, who perform solo works and receive feedback in front of an audience. Free entry.
July 11th at 14:00 and 16:00 in Kaldalón Hall: Rising Stars - Senior Division Solo Recitals
Fifty students from seven countries participate in this year’s Academy senior division. In these concerts, students perform solo works they have studied with the Academy’s excellent faculty.
July 12th at 16:00 in Norðurbryggja: Rising Stars - Senior Division Chamber Music Recital
Fifty students from seven countries participate in this year’s Academy senior division. All of the chamber groups will perform in this concert, playing movements of masterworks from the chamber music repertoire. Free entry.
July 13th at 11:00 in Harpa Corner: Rising Stars - Junior Division Solo Recital
Twenty students participate in this year’s Academy junior division. In this concert, the students perform solo works they have studied with the Academy’s excellent faculty. Free entry.
July 13th at 12:30 in Northern Lights Hall: “On Wings of Song” - Violin Recital with Ziyu He
The 18 year old Ziyu He has caught the violin world’s attention in recent years, winning top prizes in many international competitions. Star pianist Vladimir Stoupel joins Ziyu He in this duo recital featuring works by Schubert, Dvorák, Paganini and Li Zili.
July 13th at 14:00 and 16:00 in Northern Lights Hall: Rising Stars - Senior Solo and Junior Chamber Recitals
Fifty students from seven countries participate in this year’s Academy senior division. In these concerts, students perform solo works they have studied with the Academy’s excellent faculty. The junior division chamber groups will perform in the concert at 14:00.
July 14th at 12:00 in Eldborg: Rising Stars - Senior Division Piano Recital
Fifty students from seven countries participate in this year’s Academy senior division. In this concert, the piano students perform solo works on Harpa’s main stage, playing on the best grand piano in Iceland.
July 14th at 16:00 in Harpa Corner: “Dancing on Strings” - Junior Division Group Performance
Eurovision celebrity Greta Salóme Stefánsdóttir instructs students of the junior division in an improvisational workshop with dance elements. This is the final performance of the group. Free entry.
July 14th at 17:00 in Eldborg: „The Centenary of Icelandic Sovereignty“ - Festival Concert
The Harpa International Music Academy concludes with a concert by the Academy Symphony Orchestra, performing four works including Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony and Eldur by Jórunn Viðar. Conductor is Bjarni Frímann Bjarnason with soloists Ziyu He and Ásta Dóra Finnsdóttir.
