Gail Van Tatenhove – Creating Core Vocabulary Environments for Students with Complex Motor and Communication Needs
Core vocabulary is the key in communication. In this course the emphasizes will be on how to implement core vocabulary within the classroom and connect it to visual support, role model and direct vocabulary input. In the making of a communicative system for students with complex communications needs the emphasizes is often on the basic needs and special circumstances. The vocabulary that is then accessible for the child therefor only includes representational and situational words that are considered „easy“ and will fulfill the communicational need of the individual. The approach that is taught in this course emphasizes on core vocabulary instead of situational vocabulary. The representational communicative system is then replaced with a system with accessible core words that can be used regardless of surroundings and with any speaker. In this course we will learn methods to implement the learning environment that supports core vocabulary admission.
This course is meant for speech language therapists, teachers, physiotherapists, instructors and other professionals that work with students with complex motor and communicational needs.
