The Harpa International Music Academy’s 5th annual festival for classical music students will be held from June 1st – 17th. Over 100 students from 10 countries will study with Icelandic and international faculty. The students will participate in private lessons, chamber music and orchestra.

Events in Harpa’s Northern Lights Hall:

June 7th at 12: Young violinists
Upcoming star violinists Johan Dalene from Sweden and Maya Buchanan from Chicago will perform virtuoso works for violin and piano. These gifted 17 year olds have won prizes in many competitions.

June 7th at 20: String Quartets
Participants in Sibbi Bernhardsson’s intensive string quartet seminar will perform string quartets.

June 10th, 10-12:30 and 13-15:30: Masterclasses
Masterclasses taught by select faculty members, where students perform solo works and receive coaching in front of an audience.

June 10th at 17: Faculty Recital
The Academy’s faculty members are also excellent performers. In this concert they share their talents in a varied program of chamber or solo works.

June 13th at 20: Violin Recital with Dan Zhu
Dan Zhu is one of China’s best known violinists. Since performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in Carnegie Hall at the age of 18, he has travelled around the world as a performing and recording artist. He is joined by pianist Julien Quentin in a program including the Franck Violin Sonata and Wieniawski’s Faust Fantasy.

June 17th: Festival Concert
On Iceland’s Independence Day, the Academy Orchestra performs Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony and the Wind Serenade by Strauss. Johan Dalene brings us the world of gypsies with Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen, and the Academy’s youngest participants perform in the junior orchestra.
