Daniel Blake is a 59 year old carpenter who has just suffered a heart attack. His doctor tells him he can‘t work – but after answering an absurd government questioner the system tells him he can. What follows is a long struggle against an impersonal Kafkaesque system, made possible by Blake‘s quiet dignity and determination. He befriends a single mother of two in an even more difficult position and despite his troubles manages to help her in a film about ordinary people sticking together when the government is failing them.

The film has received numerous awards, the Palm d‘Or at Cannes and a BAFTA for Best British Film of the year among them. The film was ranked sixth in Sight & Sound‘s annual critic’s poll – comprised of critics from various countries.
