The paths of three people cross during World War II. Olga is a Russian aristocratic emigrant and member of the French Resistance, Jules is a French collaborator and Helmut is a high-ranking German SS officer. Olga is arrested for hiding Jewish children – and thus begins a love triangle between those three people, who are all on different sides of the war.

The film was one of nine films shortlisted for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. Konchalovskiy won the Best Director prize in Venice for the film.
