April 1940. The Germans have reached the shores of Norway and aim to occupy the country. They manage to occupy Oslo and other main cities, but King Haakon VII manages to flee to northern Norway along with the government. Meanwhile the Germans aim to establish a puppet government led by Vidkun Quisling. But first they need the king‘s signature. So the old king must decide, should he let the Norwegians keep fighting an impossible battle or should they keep going and side with the allies?

The film was one of nine films shortlisted for the Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards.
