At the Söngfjelag's choir tenth anniversary Christmas concert, the common thread is Balkan music based on strong national traditions. In addition to the Icelandic choir, an international selection of artists will be performing: the Skuggamyndir frá Býsans band, well known to Icelandic music lovers, the trio TRËI coming from Basel in Switzerland and singer Rumyana Filkova from Bulgaria along with accordionist Borislav Zski.

The roots of Balkan music lie all over Southeastern Europe, in countries such as Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Turkey and Greece. A strong dance tradition stems from the music, characterized by a complex rhythm. The concert will feature songs from various Balkan countries, with emphasis on performing in the original language. Balkans living in Iceland have been working with the choir, aiming to capture the impressions and pronunciations, as well as the folk dances, so that the performers may gain a deeper understanding of the music.
