The Practice Performed is a dance piece created in real time. In the performance movement, music, and lights are composed in the moment - creating a unique dance performance each time it is performed. The intention is to create a multilayered world where the audience is given the opportunity to witness the fragile moments when decisions are made in creation. By staging such moments equal value is given to the precariousness of the moment as to the preparedness of preset performances.
The work is one of the manifestations of the artistic research EXPRESSIONS: the power and politics of expectations in dance and is based on the ideology and methodology developed through that project. The research explores expectations within the institution of dance by creating spaces of exploration and analysis where critical engagement with the inner and outer structural expectations of contemporary dance can be encountered. The research was initiated in 2017 and is led by Icelandic choreographer Steinunn Ketilsdóttir in collaboration with a team of international artists and scholars. It takes on multiple forms and facets; a method for movement creation, theoretical approach to the research, communication with the public through published texts, presentations, and discourse and the creation of dance pieces.
