Bíó Paradís

Event info

A dive, the noon sunlight cuts through the water. The air in both lungs will have to be enough to rip the abalone from the rocks in the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. With no aid from air tanks or any other tools to enable underwater breathing, the body as a whole is summoned to its limit. In Wagu, a fishing village in the Ise Peninsula, Matsumi, Mayumi and Masumi dive everyday not knowing what they’ll find. Underwater, their delicate bodies turn into those of sea hunters. The Ama-San have been diving like this in Japan for over 2000 years.

This film is built around women whose antagonist is none other that life itself, nothing (and everything) heroic to it. It is a film about the sweetness that a woman who is capable of everything allows herself. It is about women’s power and the way it is channelled, in the sea and on land. It is a film about strength – not over others – but over our own body facing life.

Premiers June 21st in Bíó Paradís – ONLY shown for 1 week with English subtitles!!!

“It’s a style of film-making that’s as traditional and in its way mannered as the head wraps and diving techniques that are being observed.” -Leslie Felperin, The Guardian

“Ama-San is a bewitching dive into both family and national history alive with the symbiotic relationship the ama have with their environment; it feeds them, pays their wage, they live happily from it.” -Blythe Worthy, 4:3, Sydney Film Festival
