1844. Karl Marx is 26 years old and living with his wife Jenny in exile in Paris. He is habitually in debt and plagued by existential anxieties. When he first meets the slightly younger factory owner’s son Friedrich Engels he dismisses him as a dandy.

The Guardian review by Peter Bradshaw gave the film four out of five stars and stated, “It shouldn’t work, but it does, due to the intelligence of the acting and the stamina and concentration of the writing and directing.
