You’ve never seen a rape-revenge fantasy quite like “Elle,” not least because the rape, revenge and fantasy components of that subgenre have never been quite so fascinatingly disarranged.

It premiered in competition for the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival where it received critical acclaim. Elle was subsequently selected as the French entry for the Best Foreign Language film at the 89th Academy Awards, but was not nominated.
