The film is set in Portugal, with the plot drawing from current events. The structure of the film is based on One Thousand and One Nights, where Scheherazade told stories to save her life. The outcome is an epic trilogy of more than six hours, a director‘s passionate analysis of the country that bred him.

Miguel Gomes directed three feature films before he embarked on the trilogy. His debut was The Face You Deserve, followed by Our Beloved Month of August. He finally shot to international fame with Tabu, a poetic black-and-white film about a past life under the foothills of Mt. Tabu in Africa. Tabu would win two awards at the Berlinale and plenty of awards were to follow, both at home and abroad.
