Butch Tribute is a performance series based on a physical and performative exploration of queer, female masculinity, with and by Norwegian choreographers and performers Marte Reithaug Sterud and Ann-Christin Kongsness. We are inspired by butch - a term used to describe masculine women in the queer community, a group who are often marginalized and ignored. Through three smaller dance performances, we want to diversify the representation of butches, by demonstrating different representations of queer, female masculinity.
In the performance Flirt, we take full ownership of the stage, we are active, flirtatious, contact seeking, and thrive on attention and response from the audience. It is about insisting on being the gaze and not only the eye catcher. The hard hitting punk statement in the performance Roses, is inspired by making a butch version of the choreography Rosas danst Rosas (1983) by Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker, a piece that unites a feminine gender expression with the minimalistic dance tradition. The performance Flannel Dream is an intimate duet between two butches, set in a landscape of flannel shirts. Butch-on-butch relationships finally get the epic lovestory they deserve.
